The Melbourne Hook Turn

I was waiting at the lights the other day and thought the look out of the car window would make for a good photo. The cars you see lined up are waiting to do a hook turn.

For those who don’t know, a hook turn is a right turn made from the left side of the road. The cars queue up in the left lane when the traffic lights are green and then proceed to turn right once the light turns red or amber. These turns are common in the Melbourne CBD to improve the flow of through-traffic where otherwise cars would be waiting in the right lane to turn right blocking through-traffic and trams.

Oh and in Australia cars drive on the left side of the road in case you were thinking all this doesn’t sound quite right.

I am an Australian now living in Canada where cars drive on the right side of the road and if that isn’t bad enough the steering wheel is on the opposite side of the car. Give me the left side any day.

I would get totally confused driving on the left side of the road, and I have always wondered which was the “right” way, and why the whole world doesn’t drive on the right side of the road. haha

Thanks for coming by my site, I like this place, your photo’s are rad. :)

Guys, guys, guys, it does take quite some time to get used driving in the opposite direction and since I am accustomed in the opposite direction than you are, I will not be able to drive a car in Australia or in the UK any time soon :)

BTW Kham, you were just tagged by me, so please go to take the details from my blog. Have a nice week ahead!
