It’s been a little while since I’ve posted something about food so I thought hey, why not take a photo of my lunch and write about it? Haha so here you have it. Grilled Vegemite and cheese on toast. For those of you who don’t know what Vegemite is, it’s a dark brown, savoury food spread made from yeast extract and is very popular in Australia and New Zealand. Some people who try it for the first time say it’s disgusting. I guess it’s an acquired taste that once you have a taste for it, it’s like the best thing ever.

So yeah, it’s just sliced bread spread with a decent amount of Vegemite, topped with your choice of cheese (I like to use vintage cheddar for the extra bite) and into the grill. A few minutes later, you’ll have something like what you can see below. Yummo!

Hmm…I don’t think we have Vegemite here in Malaysia but we have Marmite. I don’t take it so not sure if folks put them on bread or porridge or perhaps both. :D

  2. Kham says:

Yep, Marmite is a similar product. Marmite is popular in counties like England and New Zealand so Malaysia would most likely get it from one of those countries.

I’ve personally never had it on anything other than on bread but I’ve heard of people adding it to soups.

  3. Serena says:

Ah, yes, in the soup too. :)

Ooo… Now this I would LOVE. In South Africa (and England) we call it Marmite, and I have Marmite and cheese on crackers EVERY SINGLE DAY. I’m not bored of it yet, and I’ve been eating it for the past 4 years for breakfast. It’s DIVINE. The melted cheese looks even yummier though!!!

There is yet another “mite” you are overlooking. Promite. It is the happy medium between Vegemite and Marmite.

  8. Dimi says:

Isn’t Marmite totally different?? They have totally different compositions. I have personally had Vegemite with melted cheese it’s great. Vegemite is the best.

  9. I’m no gourmet so I think Vegemite and Marmite do taste a little similar.

  10. Danielle says:

Vegemite, Marmite and Promite all taste SIMILAR, however definitely not the same. I can stand Marmite and Promite, although I would never buy them. Vegemite I would buy.
